Journal-12/01/2011

Today was a very exciting day because WE FINISHED EDITING :) this was a very important point for us as a group because of all the chopping and changing we did to our music video last minute and the problems we had with final cut pro. The video now documents the band having fun whilst performing and having fun with each other which gives off a nice interpretation of the band. When we look back to our original storyboard the final product doesn't look anything like we first hoped although there are some of the same elements from the original storyboard for example the thumbs up when the song says "we're alright" and the fact we have documented teenagers having fun, some of the changes we have incorporated a photomonatge in the instrumental part of the song in order to give the video a different level and so the audience don't get bored and feel like they are seeing the same thing for 3 minutes.. Overall as a group we are very happy with the video we created and we feel it documents youth and fun in a very positive way.

Journal-11/01/2011

Today we editied a few more parts of our music video as it got to the instrumental part of the video myself and my teacher felt that there was something lacking almost like we wanted to see something different so after a long disscision we felt that photos of the band will give the video a new level and something interesting to look at. The instrumental part of the song has two parts to it a quick up tempo section and a more moderate temp section. During the quick section I cut the clips so when played they moved quickly along with the beat of the song and as the solo changes the images pop up and again move to the beat of the song. Overall today has been a very productive day.

05/01/2011 Journal

Today we began editing the performance shots, unfortunalty during the editing process my computer froze so we had to re-import our footage onto Final Cut Pro.As the footage got uploaded we begain cutting and putting the clips together. As we put the scenes together we realised how important it was that everything was prefectly in sync.

We are editing the footage in Fina Cut Pro, this software is much easier to edit on than I-movie, the reason we as a group find it easier to edit on because when it comes to cutting the clips we can get exactly what we want and not cut off any bits we need.

Journal-05/01/2011-Editing

The software we are using to edit our music video is Final Cut Pro, we are very happy that Final cut has now been installed onto the new macs because we find it is much easier to edit on than i-movie and its much easier to put all the clips in sync. It is also easier to to add photos and text onto the clips using Final Cut.

Journal 3/01/2011

Today we filmed the remaining performance shots of our music video, the shots were filmed in my living room, the reason we chose my living in particular is because the lighting works very well in the space we had. The band themselves looked more comfortable during these shots which work well in context with the other shots we already have. The band themselves aren't playing musical instruments, we have the band playing the guitar hero instruments, we wanted to use these because we wanted the idea of work and play to come into one, and with really steady, crisp clean shots it works very well.

The whole of the performance shots were filmed on a tripod in comparison to the POV shots we previously filmed

Journal-15/12/2010

Today we planned the Digi Pack element of this project. I decided to use images from the original perfomance shots, just because I feel they portray the band in a positive fun way. As well as the Digi Packs Jason and I started to think of ways to make the band seem more real. We decided on making the band a Twitter account the reason we decided on Twitter is because its the most popular social networking sites amongst young fans and young bands. Together we feel this makes the band seem as real and in touch with their fans, which is something very important in today's industry.

Journal- 13/12/2010

Today Jason and myself edited the new footage I filmed on Thursday, first of all we listened to the song and decided what shots worked best with the song. This technique helped us very much because we got to see where the performance shots would fit in best and we have become very excited about seeing the final footage.

Journal-10/12/2010

Unfortuantly we have decided to re-film the performance shots because we didn't think they worked well with the new shots we have filmed. We have decided to film the perfomance shots focusing on the band playing guitar hero, but in order for it to look professional we want to set it up like a proper studio and with tight close shots  but when you look closely you realise they are playing a video game, we also think this would work well with the new shots of the band having fun.

Filming Journal 09/12/2010

Today we planned on filming the scenes of the band having fun, unfortunately Molly and Jason were unable to attend filming so I went alone to film these shots. As I got to the house we were filming in i decided to set up the scenes of them having fun.

The scenes I set up were
  • Three of the members bundling the other member
  • Two of the memebers run in on one of the memebers on the toilet
  •  All of the members are driving around in a car just generally having fun
  • Two of the memebers don't let the one of the members into the house
  • Two of the members are in the kitchen laughing and having a joke with eachother and another memeber comes up to the window and pulls a funny face
  •  One of the members brushes his teeth, and gargles with wine and insted of spitting it out, he drinks it
  • All of the memebers are getting ready to go out and generally start having fun.
  • All of the memebers walk down the street with POV shots throughout.
While three of the members are infront of the camera one of the other memebers was holding the camera so again it looks like a home movie.

Filming-Take Two

Whilst looking at the shots we filmed in the pub, we were getting a bit consernd at how the shots looked, we noticed there wasn't a vartiety of shots and the band themselves didn't look very energetic, so we had to re-think our ideas (yet again). We've decided to film the majority of the scenes focusing on the band having fun, and when we think of fun we mean just being 4 teenage boys. We've decided to make these shots look like a home movie and the performance shots to look really professional HOWEVER we have decided we would like the performance shots to be the band playing guitar hero, again to emphasise them as friends and as a band.

Editing

07/12/2010- Journal

In todays lesson we started editing the shots of the band in the pub, initally it was very stressfull because we had to cut the clips before we could even think of putting them in some kind of order, however we didn't realise there was an easier way to cut on the editing software this made the whole process 10x easier. As a group we wanted to make the video look visually exicting so we found a few effects that we wanted to incorporate into the video. The main thing we have to consider is not to overuse the effects, its this that we will all have to decide upon as a group because we don't want to video to look to "edited"

EFFECTS WE HAVE CHOSEN
N-Sqaure. The reasone we have chosen this effect is because when used in "indie" music videos it creates a very carefree, fun feel to the the video.
Mirror- The reason we have chosen this effect is again because it gives off a very carefree feel to the video and it shows that the band don't take themselves to seriously.

27/11/2010-Journal

Today WE FINALLY FILMED. We started filming at 12pm at The Duchess of Edinburgh pub in Welling. The main shots we had in the pub were of the band playing there instruments, it soon became apparent that we needed a bt more substance to the video, we've decided to film shots of the band having fun and making it look as if its a home video, the main bulk of the video will be the band having fun with the perfomance shots embedded througout the video.

A Sudden Change Of Plan

Today we ran into a little problem, the house we were going to film the party in is now unavalible for us to shoot in. So I suggested to the group we film the band having fun in a recording studio but one of the memebers in our group wasn't really feeling the idea. So I suggested we film in a function room of a pub and make it look like the band are performing a gig to a group of friends, and since I know some people that own pubs we thought this would be the most suibtable solution. In regards to making the funtion room look pack we are going to consider how tightly we shoot each frame. We are still going to include P.O.V shots but this time of the people in the pub and we are going to try and portray little snap shots of life in a pub on a friday night.

15/11/2011-Journal

In today's lesson we got paper templates for our digi packs, after we recieved the templates we drew out a rough design of what we would like on our digi pack. This was very helpfull to me because it helped me consilidate my ideas and I could really get an idea of the type of photos we would need to take on our music video shoot, because we have to create our own digi packs we had to come up with our own ideas for the photo shoots, again I found this very helpful because I got to see the ideas my group had, and it got me very excited to take the photos/

Journal-11/11/2010

Today was the day we were meant to begin filming the cafe scenes, however one of our band members wasn't in school today so we were unable to film. So instead of abandoning the whole day we've decided to take Recce and Test Shots of the places we want to film. We've decided to do this because we want to see what the shots will look like and we can get a general idea of the shots will look like when we come to film the actual shots. It has also given us time to carefully plan the party scene and by taking these test shots we will be able to see how we need to set up the shots in regards to the instruments and where we want them placed.

Journal-10/11/2010

In today's lesson we delivered our pitches to the rest of the class, this was really helpful because the rest of the class got to see the point we'd gotten to. Overall the feedback was positive on our pitch however one thing that did come out of the pitches was we really need to plan the party scenes very carefully and we need to think about how we're going to make use of the time we have.

09/11/2010-Journal

Today we went to Rich Mix music video conference at Shoreditch Highstreet. The conference was titled "From MTV to Youtube" and was hosted by Pete Fraser, and featured a talk from music video director Corin Hardy the conference also featured a talk from music video producer Liz Kessler. The whole experience was very interesting because we got to see how the music video industry works in detail. As Pete Fraser delivered his talk to us he talked to us about the history of the music video from the french inspired Scopitone  to the American influenced video Jukeboxes Pete also showed us successful music videos from other schools, this was a massive help because we got to see what you need to do to create a realistic piece of media, Pete also gave us 10 top tips to follow in order to create a piece if media people would want to look at.
 1. Limber up - learn to plan, test shots, remake existing video

2. Choose track

3. Treatment - clear concept, plan everything, props, location

4. Blog - keep a blog of all ideas

5. Know your equipment

6. The shoot - shot times, stroryboard, extra angles

7. Capture footage - label everything, organise

8. Edit - cut again, dynamic, whole picture

9. Screening - feedback

10. Anaylsis

.  The talk from Liz Kessler was very interesting because she was able to tell us how the music video industry works from track to video and the whole process between;  the talk from music video director Corin Hardy was also very interesting because he was able to give us tips on how to create a realistic video. During the conference we had to pitch an idea to Corin,Liz and Pete for the video God and Satan by Biffy Clyro, this was very exciting because 1: It helped us deliver our own pitches and 2: Corin actually directed the official video so he was able to tell us if it would actually work in context with the song.

Overall I really enjoyed the trip to Rich Mix and its given me a lot of ideas on how to perfect my own music video.

Journal-08/11/2010

In today's lesson we had to do a little bit of re-arranging, unfortunately Ben was unable to film on the day we were going to start filming on we were disappointed with this but we soon realised we had to move on and find someone else to fill Ben's shoes. So we've decided to use our friend Connor to be the guitar player for the band as a group we're happy about this because we now feel the band are more complete. We had to re-arrange the order of the band and now we feel the band is complete and we are very excited to begin filming.
